Annual report and business review

Read our latest annual report and business review, detailing the activities and achievements of the Law Society and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), as the Law Society Group.

Founded in 1825, the Law Society is the professional body for solicitors in England and Wales. For nearly 200 years, we’ve championed solicitors working in the public interest, and their role in protecting rights and promoting justice.

We have over 200,000 members across England and Wales, and we’re proud to represent a dynamic and diverse profession.

Our highlights from 2023/24

Our work is underpinned by core areas of focus:

  • representing and advocating for the profession
  • building community and a sense of belonging
  • providing trusted resources and tools for professional development
  • championing the value of the profession
  • supporting our members’ businesses to navigate the future

2023/24 marked the second year of our 2022/25 corporate strategy. The strategy sets out four key objectives that will guide our work:

  1. promote the value of the profession and provide a compelling member offer
  2. protect the justice system and make sure it applies to everyone equally
  3. maximise our potential by growing our commercial reach, by being efficient and sustainable
  4. be an employer of choice for people who want to make a difference

Community and a sense of belonging

In 2023/24, we continued to amplify the voices of solicitors on our channels by telling their stories covering a range of topics, including:

  • being your authentic self at work
  • overcoming adversity to succeed in your legal career, and
  • highlighting the lived experiences of solicitor apprentices

Our award-winning communications strategy saw the number of times our content was seen on LinkedIn increase by 92% throughout the year, to almost 14 million views.

We continued to keep our members up to date with the latest news with our flagship newsletter, Professional Update, seeing an almost 50% average open rate throughout 2023/24.

Championing the value of the profession

2023/24 marked the second of our Legal Heroes awards, which recognises solicitors who have shown personal commitment and leadership to make a significant difference to other people’s lives.

In September 2024, we came together to celebrate the remarkable contributions of our five winners and all those shortlisted.

Representing our members, and advocating for justice and the rule of law

In August 2024, immigration solicitors and firms were targeted with threats of violence during riots that broke out across the country.

We quickly formed a crisis team to alert the government and police at the most senior levels and contacted all solicitors and firms who appeared on the list of targets to provide support and guidance.

Our statement condemning the riots received over 6,400 engagements and 501 reposts on LinkedIn, and was featured in national, regional and trade news publications, including the Telegraph, the Guardian, the Times and Sky News.

Our president spoke on Channel 4 News about the risk to the safety and wellbeing of solicitors and highlighted our support and guidance for members on how to remain safe.

Being an employer of choice

In 2023/24, we built on our achievements in the Investors in People (IIP) and Inclusive Employers initiatives.

In our annual staff survey, 72% of staff said the Law Society is a “great place to work” and 81% reported feeling their work has a “positive impact on society”.

We were shortlisted for two IIP awards, in the ‘learning and development’ and ‘employer of the year – silver’ categories and were awarded a Disability Confident Leader (Level 3) accreditation after being independently audited by Business Disability Forum – the highest level an organisation can be awarded.

We also successfully delivered our third year of the 10,000 Black Interns programme, which saw us provide paid work experience for 11 interns across 10 departments over the summer of 2024.
