Promoting equality and diversity
'BT has worked closely with the Law Society and the Society of Asian Lawyers in sponsoring the diversity charter. BT has a diverse customer base and this needs to be reflected throughout our business, including legal suppliers. The charter will underline the fact that diversity is a central issue to the legal profession.'
Christine Moore, head of diversity enterprises and consulting, BT
Equality and diversity principles are embedded in everything we do. Recent achievements include:
- Ensuring that the LSC considered the potential impact of changes to legal aid provision on BME firms and their clients.
- Leading the Great Quality of Life debate to provoke discussion about issues of staff retention, work/life balance and flexible working.
- Pressing the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) to address the lack of diversity in judicial appointments.
- Creating a BME forum to serve BME solicitors better.
We host events with BME organisations, including the successful biennial Minority Lawyers Conference, and recently held a roundtable discussion to encourage the buyers of legal services to use the procurement process to promote diversity in the profession.
We continue to work with the MoJ and JAC to address inequalities in the judiciary.
