What is the Mental Health Accreditation Scheme?

The Mental Health Accreditation Scheme covers the representation of patients in all proceedings before the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health) under the Mental Health Act 1983. Tribunal representatives are encouraged to read the Law Society's representation before mental health tribunals practice note.

Members will have shown, to the satisfaction of the Law Society, that they have and will maintain a high level of knowledge, skills, experience and practice in the area of mental health law.

Code of practice

All members also agree to follow the Law Society Code of Practice for Mental Health (PDF).

How do I apply?

The general scheme application criteria and guidance (PDF) is applicable to all Law Society accreditation schemes and should be read before starting the application process.

In order to complete the application process for the Mental Health Accreditation Scheme, please follow the steps below:

• 1. Read the Mental Health Accreditation Scheme Guidance (PDF)
• 2. Download and complete the following forms:
  • Section 1 - about your firm (Word)
  • Section 2 - about you (Word)
• 3. Download and complete the appropriate Section 3:
  • Section 3 - initial application (Word)
  • Section 3 - re-accreditation (Word)
• 4. Check the Law Society Accreditation Scheme fee schedule (PDF) for fee information.
• 5. Print, sign and post forms with the appropriate fee to the address below.
