Changes to entering an address for service at Land Registry

24 January 2013

From 28 January 2013, an address for service must be entered in the register in accordance with Royal Mail address formats.

An address for service is the address Land Registry will write to when they need to communicate with the proprietor of a registered estate. Up to three addresses can be registered for a proprietor, but one of them must be a proper recognised postal address.

Using Royal Mail address formats means that the address entered on the register may be slightly different to that given on a deed or Land Registry application form. This will also affect some charge proprietorship entries.

The purpose of the change is to ensure that Land Registry communications are delivered to the intended recipient. Land Registry says that the change will also help to prevent registration fraud.

It also says that once it has entered an address in the Royal Mail format, any subsequent request to change this to include other information will be refused.
