As a legal director with Pinsent Masons, one of the biggest national law firms, Jane is 18 years PQE and a commercial property specialist and legal director. Pinsent Masons introduced the legal director role three years ago, as an alternative career path to partnership. Legal directors attend partners meetings and take an active role in the management and development of the business.

Senior associates at Allen & Overy

Jane and Emma* are both six years PQE, and senior associates at Allen & Overy. The job share was instigated when Jane came back to work after having her second child and identified that she needed to find a different way of working. She identified Emma as a potential job share partner. Emma, at that time, was on maternity leave herself.

Flexible working

Professional support lawyer at Hogan Lovells

Robert* was an associate solicitor working in commercial litigation when a flu-like virus triggered Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), from which he has still not recovered. For more than a year he was bedridden, working entirely from home. However, for the last four years he has been able to work partly at home and partly in his employer's offices in the City.

Monica Burch, managing partner at Addleshaw Goddard

Monica Burch is the Senior Partner at Addleshaw Goddard and chairs the firm's Governance Board. Monica did not start working flexibly until the birth of her third child in 2003. The decision to work part time coincided with the arrival of her third child when she was already an equity partner.

Charlotte* trained at Penningtons before qualifying as a solicitor specialising in company and commercial law in 2007. In August 2010, her husband (who was in the Armed Forces) was posted abroad to Gibraltar for two years. At four years' post qualified, Charlotte faced difficult choices. Keen to continue her professional and career development, she started talking to her firm and the partners with whom she worked. Equally keen to keep Charlotte at Penningtons, they looked for and discussed various solutions.
