Answer
Outcome 7.8 of the SRA Code of Conduct 2011 requires that 'you have a system for supervising clients' matters, to include the regular checking of the quality of work by suitably competent and experienced people'.
Further, guidance note (iii) (i) to rule 8 of the SRA Authorisation Rules 2011 specifically refers to file reviews as a common area to consider in compliance planning.
Therefore, although file reviews are not compulsory as such, conducting regular reviews is one of the best methods a firm can adopt to show that it is complying with the rules and actively managing risk.
For further support on risk management and regulatory compliance covering this and other areas, you may wish to consider joining the Law Society’s Risk and Compliance Service.
