Surviving the storm

  • Surviving the storm

Following controversial government reforms to legal aid and the costs regime, many law firms are now faced with financial pressures and uncertain futures.

This page provides information and guidance for solicitors and trainees worried about the viability of their firms.

  • Following the closure of Blakemores Solicitors, the Law Society president Lucy Scott-Moncrieff said:

We are saddened to hear of the failure of Blakemores. This and recent similar cases dramatically illustrate the pressures on so many parts of the profession – the obvious pressures on PI and legal aid practitioners are to the forefront.

  • The Law Society and Birmingham Law Society have issued a joint statement:

The Law Society and Birmingham Law Society have implemented an action plan to support all those affected by the recent collapse of Blakemores. A dedicated online information hub has been set up for the Blakemores' 250 solicitors and employees based in Leamington and Birmingham. The Law Society and Birmingham Law Society are also working closely with the SRA to help orchestrate a smooth transfer of client files in partnership with the administrator. A further note will be issued shortly with the intention of offering a speedy process for Blakemores' clients to transfer their files to other solicitors in the Birmingham area.

  • Solicitors who have been affected by the closure of Blakemores can get in touch with Birmingham Law Society by email at info@birminghamlawsociety.co.uk.

If you were a client of Blakemores Solicitors, information is available on its website.
