Civil litigation

Find a Solicitor

Civil litigation is a process for resolving public and private legal disputes on civil matters through negotiation or through the courts. In 1999, new rules (the Civil Procedure Rules) were introduced in order to improve access to justice. These are also known as the Woolf Reforms because they were developed by Lord Woolf.

This is an area of law where we actively seek to improve the law, procedure and practice.

These pages do not attempt to explain current law or to give legal advice on civil litigation. If you want to know more or if you need advice on a civil litigation issue, you can find a civil litigation lawyer using Find a Solicitor.

The Law Society has developed accredited panels of solicitors (and others) who practise some areas of civil litigation (clinical negligence and personal injury). To be accepted onto the panel, members must prove that they meet the Law Society's rigorous standards.

Information about the Law Society's Civil Justice Committee

The Civil Litigation Committee comprises solicitors specialising in a range of civil litigation issues. The Committee identifies areas of civil litigation and procedure that require reform or review and formulates recommendations for consideration by ministers and officials. The Committee also liaises with and makes representations to ministers and officials on the Civil Procedure Rules, departmental consultations and civil litigation matters generally. In doing so, the Committee will often consult with the profession on issues concerning practice and procedure.

For details of the Committee's terms of reference, membership, and any sub committees/working parties that report to it see our directory of committees.
