The Law Society represents solicitors in England and Wales. From negotiating with and lobbying the profession's regulators, government and other decision makers, to offering training and advice, we're here to help, protect and promote solicitors.

The chief of Corporate Affairs co-ordinates the Law Society's policy and research work, our engagement with solicitors, our lobbying activity in the UK and overseas, and the running of our Council, Boards and Committees. Within Corporate Affairs, the relationship management team includes regional managers in eight English regions, a head of Wales, and a relationship manager for the 'Top 100' law firms. The team's main aims include establishing and sustaining relationships with solicitors in order to represent them effectively, engaging members through promoting a range of the Law Society's initiatives, services and products, and forging strategic alliances with key external stakeholders to add value to solicitors' businesses. The Council member services team is responsible for all aspects of the work of the Law Society's Council, Boards and Committees, which provide the focus for the governance of the Society and the development of Society policies. It also runs the election and appointment processes for Council, Boards and Committees, and is the 'first port of call' for Council members, as our governing body, wishing to engage with the rest of the organisation.

The post-holder will act as joint PA to the heads of Relationship Management (HRM) and Council Member Services (HCMS). In this role, the successful candidate will effectively manage and coordinate the HRM's and HCMS's diaries, including meeting prioritisation and, where required in particularly busy periods, finding alternatives to face-to-face meetings; coordinate the HRM's and HCMS's engagements, ensuing they have the appropriate documentation in advance for all engagements, and that travel and accommodation arrangements are planned effectively; engage with the HRM and HCMS to prioritise incoming post/emails, initiate actions, dealing with if appropriate on own initiative; co-ordinate and compile information and documents for boards and committees; and engage with internal and external stakeholders (including Private Office, relationship manager, and senior staff across the organisation) to deliver on tasks as required.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they have the following:

  • Ability to act in a professional manner at all times, including dealings with senior stakeholders, showing high levels of proactivity, confidentiality, discretion and integrity
  • Strong secretarial and administrative experience
  • Up-to-date IT literacy / skills including experience with MS Office including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook (and ideally Access databases and standard office finance processing software)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in order to explain / understand information and advice easily and succinctly
  • A track record of completing projects and assignments successfully
  • Ability to work well in a rapidly changing and pressured environment
  • Ability to resolve competing priorities proactively and efficiently
  • Ability to work with tact and diplomacy at all times, maintaining confidence where required
