Legal Aid

Legal aid is managed by the Legal Services Commission at www.legalservices.gov.uk. Only firms awarded contracts by the Legal Services Commission can provide legally aided services. If you think you may be entitled to free legal advice, you should check that the firm you choose has a contract with the Legal Services Commission, to deal with your legal problem. For further information about the legal issues covered by legal aid and some information about entitlement to free legal advice, please click here.
  1. A Community Legal Service Quality Mark, or
  2. A legal aid contract
To check whether your solicitor has a Quality Mark or a Legal Aid contract, you can search the Legal Service Commission's Legal Advisor Finder.

Fixed fee interview

Even if you don't qualify for legal aid, the first appointment with a solicitor can sometimes be low cost or free of charge. The solicitor can use this appointment to diagnose your problem, tell you what solutions the law can offer or to discuss costs. Free first appointments are available through two Law Society schemes:

  1. Accident Line if you think you may have a compensation claim following an accident
  2. Lawyers for your Business if you are working freelance or in business

Wheelchair access

Some organisations offer wheelchair accessible facilities. Some may also offer other services for people with disabilities. You may want to find out from the firm what facilities they can offer.
