The Lawyer reports that the Law Society has produced a comprehensive guide for solicitors to help them protect against misuse by criminals and demonstrate compliance with anti-money laundering requirements.
Law Society chief executive Desmond Hudson is quoted. He says: 'Solicitors have a key role to play in helping to fight crime and reduce the ability of criminals to misuse legal services in an attempt to keep their ill-gotten gains. Compliance with money laundering obligations is one of the greatest challenges for solicitors in the UK today due to the scope of the threat. It is essential that firms have implemented effective procedures for dealing with this type of threat.'
