A judicial career

5 October 2012

Christopher Stephens, chairman of the Judicial Appointments Commission, looks at the challenges and opportunities of a judicial career.

The flexible and varied nature of judicial work can make it a fulfilling option whatever your legal background or personal circumstances.

There are clearly practical attractions to working in the judiciary.

Working part-time is an appealing proposition for younger applicants with children or parental caring responsibilities, though of course the benefits of a judicial career go much further than that. The Judicial Commissioners tell me they are fortunate to have a job that is stimulating and rewarding. They find colleagues are friendly and helpful. I hope this has also been the experience of those of you who have secured a judicial appointment.

But there is no doubt it is very hard work, and is a job which carries heavy responsibilities: the decisions made by Judges can have a profound effect on people's lives. Administering justice according to law is important and honourable. The task of preparing reasons for judgement is often demanding but it is also capable of giving great intellectual satisfaction. Responding to the challenge of being a just and efficient judge is a task worthy of any lawyer's mettle.

I hope you continue to find it fulfilling and worthwhile and that you will consider further judicial opportunities as and when your career and experience permit.
