Equality and diversity

  • The Law Society is commited to principles of equality and diversity, and to working with our members to support practice in these areas.

    • Equal opportunities means maximising employee potential and ensuring that all employees and job applicants receive equal access in relation to employment, terms and conditions, training, promotion and services
    • Diversity is about recognising, respecting and valuing the differences between individuals. It means treating people as individuals and accounting for inequalities and disadvantages.

Law Society Group Equality and Diversity Framework 2012-15

The Law Society has an important responsibility to represent every member of the profession and to support the profession in its efforts to reflect the society it serves and achieve an approach to inclusion that meets the expectations of solicitors and their clients today. In December 2011, the Law Society Council agreed an Equality and Diversity Framework for 2012-2015.

This framework sets out the equality and diversity objectives for the Law Society for 2012-15. These specific objectives have been aligned to the Society's three core goals. The objectives will drive improvement in the Society's and the profession's business performance and significantly accelerate the rate of progress towards equality of opportunity, greater diversity of the profession and effective, inclusive working practices.

    Diversity monitoring

As part of our Equality Framework and in compliance with our public sector equality duty, we collect and publish data on employees and job applicants.

We have also created a diversity monitoring form for firms to use with recruitment consultants:
