The Law Society has secured its members two face-to-face meetings with the lord chancellor Chris Grayling.
The meetings, which will take place in London within the next two weeks, will allow criminal legal aid practitioners to discuss the government's proposals directly with the lord chancellor.
The lord chancellor will meet with practitioners next week. Local law societies have been asked to send representatives to a second meeting, also set to take place in two weeks' time.
Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, president of the Law Society, said:
'We welcome the lord chancellor's readiness to come face-to-face with legal aid practitioners to discuss the government's proposals.
'As practitioners who are at the frontline of the impact of the legal aid cuts, our members are best placed to comment on the proposals.
'We hope that after hearing from those at the very heart of a system that ensures access to justice, the lord chancellor will take appropriate action.'
