The Law Society president has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the president of the Korean Bar Association (KBA), Dr Young-Moo Shin, to build further on links between the two jurisdictions.
Law Society president Lucy Scott-Moncrieff signed the MoU in Seoul, South Korea as part of a series of activities arranged by the Law Society and KBA. The move follows the opening of the Korean legal services market under the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement which came into force earlier this year and the recent issuing of licenses by Korea to UK firms to establish offices in the market. The two organisations will work towards greater collaboration between the professions and promoting new opportunities for their members in the UK and Korea.
Lucy Scott-Moncrieff said: 'The MoU and the further activities the Law Society has planned with the KBA over the next six months are important developments for solicitors in England and Wales. South Korea is an important market for our members with plenty of opportunities. It also has clear ambitions to become the dispute resolution capital of North Asia.
'The Law Society has a role to play in paving the way for greater co-operation between solicitors and lawyers in Korea. The MoU is part of that collaboration.'
The Law Society will be meeting the South Korean Ministry of Justice, British Embassy and other representatives of the legal profession during the visit. A joint seminar on international arbitration has also been arranged by both the KBA and Law Society.
