Law Society supports Ken Clarke's proposals to introduce more flexible working arrangements for judges

Responding today to the announcement, by the Government, of a consultation on proposed amendments to the statutory and regulatory frameworks for judicial appointments to enable clear career progression and flexible working arrangements, together with improving judicial diversity, Law Society President John Wotton said:

“We support the measures proposed by Ken Clarke to introduce more flexible working arrangements available to judges at every level, which in itself may serve to increase the diversity of the judiciary. The Law Society will be responding to the Ministry of Justice consultation to support the increased scope for part-time sitting because we recognise that family commitments or care arrangements can deter some people from applying for judicial appointments.

“The profession as a whole would benefit from increased scope for mid-career flexible working; by extension this would increase the likelihood of more men and women working as part time judges.”
