Online reputation is subject of practice note from Law Society

7 March 2013

The Law Society has today published a practice note guiding firms in protecting their online reputation.

With billions of searches on Google each day, the importance of managing online reputation is becoming more important for businesses.

Law Society president Lucy Scott-Moncrieff said:

'Most law firms are now online and so are their clients, so online reputation matters.

'There is a whole generation who can't remember a time before the internet. When they need legal advice, they will go online. In fact, a firm's website is often clients' first port of call. Facebook 'likes' and tweets also count.

'You can be proactive in building a positive online reputation to counterbalance any negative content. If there are some fictitious reviews or unflattering pictures from the office party that you're not able to remove, that doesn't mean the game is over.'

The note seeks to equip lawyers and firms with the tools to build a digital presence and protect their brand online, and includes practical information on running an effective website and managing negative comment. It includes sections on:

  • Building a profile online;
  • Monitoring online reputation;
  • Measuring and improving performance; and
  • Responding to criticism.

She added:

'Online is not a fad. It's business and may cost you business if you don't take it seriously.'
