This week the Law Society will tell the Brazilian legal sector about the advantages of using the UK for international dispute resolution as it leads a contingent of UK law firms to Sao Paulo to strengthen ties further with South American economy.
Law Society President Lucy Scott-Moncrieff is in Brazil this week, leading a delegation of UK law firms who will meet with their Brazilian counterparts with a view to establishing links there. The visit coincides with the Lord Mayor’s trip to Brazil. The Law Society President will highlight the Unlocking Disputes campaign to Brazilian lawyers and businesses, which highlights London’s expertise in dispute resolution.
Lucy Scott-Moncrieff said: “This visit has two purposes. One is to cement links further between the UK and Brazilian legal sector. The second is to promote London as the dispute resolution capital of the world. The expertise and experience of commercial dispute resolution in London is why so many individuals and businesses look to the UK for legal services.
“We want to build on the already strong links we have with Brazil’s legal and business community. Last month, a delegation of Brazilian lawyers visited us too look at ways for working more closely. During the visit the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB) signed an agreement with the Law Society aimed at strengthening ties. This visit is the next step in that relationship building.
"As London passes the Olympic torch to Rio so follow opportunities in Brazil for UK businesses large and small. This will mean work for lawyers in both countries, which we are keen to facilitate through our engagement with counterparts in Brazil and trade missions such as this."
Solicitors joining the Law Society in Sao Paulo include those from CMS, Lawrence Graham LLP, Wragge & Co LLP, Fletcher Day LLP, Merchant Legal LLP, White & Case and Nabas Legal.
Brazil has more than 750,000 lawyers and, after the US, the second largest number of lawyers per capita. There are currently 20 foreign law firms registered with the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil, of which 14 are based in Sao Paulo and another 6 in Rio de Janeiro.
