UK and India's legal
bodies to work together on timetabled roadmap
Professional legal bodies from
the UK and India are jointly to thrash out a timetabled roadmap to
pave the way for the legal sectors in both countries to benefit
from greater access to India's legal services market.
The Law Society of England and
Wales and Bar Council of England and Wales have accompanied the
Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice to India. The
delegation, which is keen to emphasise the benefits of greater
collaboration in India for Indian and English lawyers alike, have
had a series of highly constructive meetings with senior Indian
lawyers, ministers and officials including Salman Khurshid, the Law
and Justice Minister and Ashok Parija, Chair of the Bar Council of
India.
The Secretary of State and Minister Khurshid agreed that the best
way forward was for the professional bodies in both countries to
work towards a road map with timelines.
Law Society President John Wotton said: 'We are very pleased to
have agreed a way forward with our colleagues at the Bar Council of
England and Wales and the Bar Council of India. We look forward to
reaching an agreement which has significant benefits to both
sides.'
