Top lawyers from Mexico will be welcomed to London and Leeds by
the Law Society of England & Wales this week, as the UK
accelerates its trade drive with Latin America's largest trading
nation.
The Law Society, which is hosting a delegation of Mexican
lawyers on March 13 as part of 'Mexico Week in the UK', said
that its members were identifying an increasing number of
opportunities in Mexico and the wider Latin American region,
including partnerships with law firms from the region.
Law Society Vice President Lucy Scott-Moncrieff said: “The
UK government is committed to doubling trade with Mexico over the
coming years. Our members, solicitors, are working alongside
professionals in a wide range of business sectors including banking
and financial services, insurance and reinsurance, infrastructure,
energy and telecommunications.
'The Mexican government has recently enacted new PPP legislation
which is expected to support a new wave of investment in
infrastructure projects. UK-based lawyers are well placed to advise
on these and other trade opportunities.
“We regularly host events on opportunities in other
markets, but we have seen a noticeable increase in interest for
Mexico related events, which are also supported by Mexico-based
lawyers. There is clearly scope for lawyers from Mexico and England
and Wales to work in partnership as Mexico establishes itself
further as a strong economy in the region and on the world
stage.”
A ddelegation of 100 Mexican business leaders are expected in
the UK as part of a week of events in London and Leeds to promote
UK-Mexico trade and investment.
The Law Society is hosting a legal seminar in London as part of
the programme, to be opened by Law Society Vice-President Lucy
Scott-Moncrieff. The programme includes panel discussions on the
legal issues for investors doing business in Mexico and growth
sectors for UK - Mexico investment, with 10 top Mexican law
firms expected to take part.
Mexico is the UK's second largest trading partner in Latin
America after Brazil. In 2010, bilateral trade in goods between the
UK and Mexico also increased by a third - totalling almost
1.9 billion. In March 2011, the British and Mexican
governments committed to double bilateral trade to 4.2
billion by 2015.
