What the Treasury can do to support the legal services sector and our justice system

8 March 2018

Ahead of the 2018 Spring Statement, and in the run up to the Autumn Budget in November, the Law Society of England and Wales has put together an assessment on the economic policies needed to ensure that the country remains a world leader in legal services, and to support our justice system.

The Law Society is calling on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to:

  • Support innovation in the legal services sector by making funding available to encourage growth and investment in legal technology companies.
  • Provide funding to reinstate legal aid for early legal advice in family law and housing cases.
  • Work together with the Ministry of Justice as part of the review of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 to ensure the justice system is adequately funded.
  • Take steps to simplify the introduction of stamp duty land tax to ensure a workable and robust regime.
