Opening of the Legal Year
Last week saw one of the most celebrated days in the legal calendar of England and Wales - the Opening of the Legal Year.
The Law Society, in conjunction with the Bar Council, took part in this ceremonial occasion on Tuesday 1 October. The day opened with Law Society president, Nick Fluck, hosting a breakfast in the Law Society halls at Chancery Lane for guests from heads of bar associations and law societies from jurisdictions across the globe.
After the breakfast, guests were taken via coach to the service held at Westminster Abbey. In attendance were the Lord Chancellor, Lord Chief Justice, president and justices of the Supreme Court, as well as other judges and members of the profession.
The event commemorates the principles of defending access to justice and the rule of law. Furthermore, it reminds all of those actively involved within the legal system of the need to uphold these principles internationally, as well as at home, for the benefit of society.
