Research guides

Our librarians have written a number of brief guides on specific legal research topics. They are practical in approach and are updated regularly. You can access the full text of the guides online by clicking on the relevant title below. We will send you printed copies of specific guides upon request. Members will also find copies on display in the Library. We will be interested to see any suggestions you may have for additional titles in the series.

Information for students and the public

We provide services for solicitors and their staff. Students completing the Legal Practice Course may also use the library. As a members-only library we do not offer a service to students generally or to members of the public. Many university libraries and some public libraries stock legal materials including legislation, law reports and journals.

We may be able to assist those requiring access to rare books and historical materials in our collections that you have not been able to find elsewhere.

Historical research

We hold a large collection of historical material of interest to legal and academic researchers. We have a substantial legal history collection, superseded legal textbooks and historical information on past solicitors. To find details of our holdings, go to Law Society Library Online, our online library catalogue.

Admission

Solicitors planning to visit the library to read historical material should contact us first to check its availability and to arrange its collection from our stores. Non-members who are bona fide academic researchers should first write requesting admission, detailing the material they would like to consult. Contact us

Past solicitors

The Library has extensive holdings of old Law Society Directories and the Law Lists and has a copy of the Roll of Solicitors on CD-Rom. You can read our legal research guide: How to trace past solicitors.
