Junior Lawyer of the Year 2009

Junior lawyer 2009 winnerThis award was open to members of the Law Society's Junior Lawyers Division including student members of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, trainees and solicitors with up to five years' active post-qualification experience.

Winner: Natasha Catterson - Fisher Meredith LLP

Natasha is committed to her clients and her work, displaying remarkable maturity in pursuing their causes. She has been rightly lauded for her work in respect of the first successful Article 3 suicide case in the higher courts.


Highly commended: Gwendolen Morgan - Bindmans LLP and Young Legal Aid Lawyers

The judges were impressed by the range of Gwendolen's projects, particularly championing individuals with disabilities, and human rights. Client references are testament to her commitment and professionalism.


Shortlisted: Balaal Hussain Khan - Khan Solicitors Ltd

Balaal has made an outstanding contribution to his local community as a mediator and civil liberty activist. As a student he sat on various panels with the aim of creating opportunities and promoting youth empowerment. More recently he has been elected as a parish councillor, voicing the concerns of the local community and recommending changes .

Shortlisted: Catherine Robinson - Fisher Meredith LLP

As well as undertaking asylum and immigration work at all levels, Catherine has demonstrated commitment to helping vulnerable and disadvantaged groups through pro bono work. This has included representing victims of domestic violence and trafficking, and teenage refugees at regular advice clinics. She is also an active member of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association .

Shortlisted: David Sinclair - Acorn Solicitors

David set up Acorn Solicitors with three former colleagues and the firm is going from strength to strength. Simultaneously he took an active role in promoting Solicitors for the Elderly, and is a trustee of a local charity. He has organised numerous conferences on issues affecting elderly clients, attracting other professionals and providing excellent training and networking opportunities.

Shortlisted: Sergio Weingarten - Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP

Qualified in both Scottish and English law, Sergio has constantly demonstrated that he is an exceptional business lawyer by continually providing a service above and beyond expectations. His ability to explain complicated and technical issues to clients as well as sound leadership and negotiation skills have made him a valuable asset to his firm.
