The clinical negligence accreditation covers all work undertaken by solicitors and suitably qualified Fellows and members of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX), arising out of any act of negligence, breach of contract and/or statutory duty, as a result of which the victim has sustained injuries in the course of medical or dental care.
Practitioners who are not scheme members will remain free to undertake clinical negligence work but will not be identified as specialists.
The accreditation is for claimant solicitors or CILEX members. Clinical negligence defendants have their own selection criteria and the skills of the defendant lawyer may be very different from those used to advise claimants.
Members will have shown, to the satisfaction of the Law Society, that they have and will maintain a high level of knowledge, skills, experience and practice in the area of clinical negligence. You will need to have personally been conducting clinical negligence cases for claimants for at least three years prior to applying for the scheme, as without such experience it is unlikely that you will be able to demonstrate the necessary expertise.
To view all current members of the scheme download a list of members (pdf 399kb). This list is updated each month.
Members of the public can also search accredited members in their area by postcode through our Find a Solicitor website.
Ensure that clients, and/or their representatives, are easily able to identify legal practitioners with proven competency in clinical negligence law.
Evidence that you maintain relevant standards of competency and expertise in the field through re-accreditation.
Demonstrate conformity to a best practice quality mark that prospective clients can trust.
See the How to apply for clinical negligence accreditation page for full details on the application process.
Applications will be accepted from solicitors and legal executives. Non-solicitor applicants must be employed by a practice regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
