We are a private library available to all solicitors of the Law Society of England and Wales and their staff. We are located in the Law Society's Hall, 113 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL.
We are open Monday to Friday. We are closed weekends and bank holidays.
You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com at any time.
All solicitors of England and Wales are automatically members of the library. If you are not currently practising but have kept your name on the roll, you can still access the library and use our services.
The following forms of identification can be used to gain access:
If non-solicitor staff, like trainees, librarians and paralegals, need access to the library, you can provide them with a letter on headed paper authorising them to visit the library on your behalf.
We run a non-member day pass scheme for non-solicitors wishing to use the library's hard copy resources. Only solicitors and QLTS students are allowed to use the databases, due to licensing reasons.
Before visiting the library, submit an application form (Word 68kb) so that we can authorise your visit.
We reserve the right to refuse admission, and we cannot give legal advice.
Charges for non-member day passes:
* Five consecutive days that the library is open, eg Thursday to Wednesday inclusive.
** One calendar month, eg 4 March to 3 April.
You can pay by credit/debit card or cheque (payable to the Law Society) once access has been authorised.
On the day of your visit please bring photo ID such as a driving licence or passport.
LPC students have access to the library and all its resources as student members of the Law Society. You must bring your university or college card, or a letter from your tutor to prove you are currently studying on an LPC. No other legal courses qualify for free access.
Qualified Lawyer Transfer Scheme (QLTS) students do not have automatic free access to the library. However, you may apply for a non-member day pass.
You have special permission to use the Westlaw and LexisLibrary databases within the library once access has been granted. You must provide proof that you are on a QLTS course to be given database access.
The library is on the first floor and can be accessed by lift from the Law Society entrance hall. If you have any individual needs, please inform us in advance so that we can make your visit as easy as possible.
We have a range of resources in the library, including a Braille keyboard, ZoomText, JAWS software on the research computers and MagniLink enlarger for printed material.
