We are a private library available to all solicitors of the Law Society of England and Wales and their staff. We are located in the Law Society's Hall, 113 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1PL.
Please be aware that the stairs to the library will be closed for several weeks. This is due to maintenance work being carried out as part of a makeover and refreshment of the building’s reception area.
For an alternative access to the library, please follow the signs or ask at reception. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
We are open Monday to Friday. We are closed weekends and bank holidays.
You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com at any time.
All solicitors of England and Wales are automatically members of the library. If you are not currently practising but your name is still on the roll, you can access the library and use our services.
The following forms of identification can be used to gain access:
If non-solicitor staff, such as trainees, librarians and paralegals etc. need access to the library, you can provide them with a letter on headed paper authorising them to visit on your behalf. A draft authorisation letter is available below.
We run a non-member day pass scheme for non-solicitors wishing to use the library's hard copy resources. Due to licensing restrictions only solicitors and QLTS students are allowed to use our Lexis, Westlaw and Justis subscriptions.
Before visiting the library, submit an application form (Word 135kb) so that we can authorise your visit. Once access has been authorised, payment must be made in advance of your visit. We accept credit/debit card or cheque (payable to the Law Society). On the day of your visit please bring photo ID such as a driving licence or passport.
We reserve the right to refuse admission, and we cannot give legal advice.
Charges for non-member day passes:
* Five consecutive days that the library is open, eg Thursday to Wednesday inclusive. ** One calendar month, eg 4 March to 3 April.
LPC students can use the library and all its resources; including those on an LPC ‘top-up’ course such as an LLM. You must bring your university or college card, or a letter from your tutor, to prove you are currently enrolled on an LPC or a ‘top-up’ course. No other legal courses qualify for free access.
Qualified Lawyer Transfer Scheme (QLTS) students do not have automatic free access to the library. However, you may apply for a non-member day pass.
You have special permission to use the Westlaw and LexisLibrary databases within the library once access has been granted. You must provide proof that you are on a QLTS course to be given database access.
The library is on the first floor and can be accessed by lift from the Law Society entrance hall. If you have any individual needs, please inform us in advance so that we can make your visit as easy as possible.
We have a range of resources in the library, including a Braille keyboard, ZoomText, JAWS software on the research computers and MagniLink enlarger for printed material.
