Annual Statistical Report 2014
This report describes the size and composition of the solicitors’ profession and describes trends in entry to the profession.
- As at 31 July 2014 there were 160,394 solicitors on the roll, and 130,382 solicitors with practising certificates (PC holders). The number of solicitors with practising certificates was 2.1% higher than at 31 July 2013, with the total number on the roll 3.1% lower than a year earlier. As a result, the participation rate (the number of solicitors on the roll holding a practising certificate) rose to 81%.
- • Representation of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) groups amongst PC holders continued to grow in 2014 to 15% and has more than doubled since 2000. A notably greater proportion of PC holders from BAME groups were women (56%) compared with those of White European origin (48%).
• In 2014 the numbers of PC holders working both in-house and in private practice were higher than a year earlier. Growth in private practitioners of 4% was the sharpest recorded for nine years. The number of private practice firms declined for the fourth consecutive year.
