Annual Statistics Report 2015
This report describes the size and composition of the solicitors' profession and describes trends in entry to the profession.
- As at 31 July 2015, there were 133,367 solicitors with practising certificates (PC holders), and 168,226 individuals in total on the Roll of solicitors. The number of solicitors with practising certificates was 2.3 per cent higher than at 31 July 2014, with the total number on the Roll 4.9 per cent higher than a year earlier. Part of this increase is likely to reflect the Solicotrs Regulation Authority's (SRA) decision not to undertake an annual Roll keeping exercise in 2015.
- Representation of Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups amongst PC holders rose to 15.5 per cent in 2015 and has more than doubled over the past 15 years. The proportion of female PC holders in BAME groups (57 per cent) was greater than the share amongst those of White European origin (48 per cent).
- In 2015 the numbers of PC holders working both in-house and in private practice were higher than a year earlier. However, in-house numbers grew at the faster rate, which led to a further expansion of the share of all practising solicitors working in-house.
