Do I have to pay trainees the Law Society's minimum salary?
I understand the Law Society recommends a minimum salary for trainee solicitors. Do I have to pay this?
The current recommended minimum salary for trainee solicitors is £22,121 in London and £19,619 outside London.
There is no regulatory requirement to pay this salary.
However, we believe that it represents good practice and employers are encouraged to consider this salary when deciding how much to pay their trainees.
Firms adopting the recommendation could promote this as good practice and are welcome to advertise that they do so.
For further information, see our guidance on the recommended salary for trainee solicitors or contact the Practice Advice Service.
