First of a kind digital economy agreement

The UK-Singapore Digital Economy Agreement (DEA) came into force this week, deepening technological and digital trade ties between the UK and Singapore.*

“We welcome the new UK-Singapore DEA coming into force,” said Law Society of England and Wales president I. Stephanie Boyce.

“This agreement is the first of its kind to include specific commitments on cooperation in technology in legal services (lawtech), an area in which the UK and Singapore are both world-leaders.

“This is a step towards helping businesses across the UK to take advantage of the agreement, which will deepen technological and digital trade ties between the UK and Singapore.

“The global lawtech market is growing rapidly. We have seen first-hand how lawyers have utilised technology during the COVID-19 pandemic. The justice system moved online and legal professionals provided services remotely, innovating at pace to keep the wheels of justice and business turning.

“The UK-Singapore agreement also acknowledges expressly the significant role that legal services play in society.

“The Law Society is keen to play its part in establishing a dialogue on matters related to lawtech with our counterparts in Singapore, such as sharing knowledge, research, industry practice, and information relating to relevant legal and regulatory frameworks, as well as how we can help our members explore new business opportunities in both the UK and Singapore.”
