Anglo-Australasian Lawyers Society Legal Services and the UK/Australia Free Trade Agreement Panel Discussion

On 31 July 2020, our International Policy Adviser, Catherine Brims, and Director of Strategic Relationships, Stephen Denyer, discussed legal services in Australia/UK trade negotiations, focusing on how the AALS contributed to our research on market access between Australia and England & Wales. You can watch a recording of the discussion.

His Excellency the Honourable Mr George Brandis QC, High Commissioner of Australia to the United Kingdom, provided opening remarks, noting that legal services are “a real deliverable in terms of this FTA”.

The discussion gave an overview of the negotiations and potential benefits for legal services, as well as sharing the experiences of panellists practising across borders, including the Qualified Lawyers’ Transfer scheme (QLTS) and the decision to work in the UK / Australia. We also gave an introduction to our international work, our key asks in the FTA discussions, and how to practise as a foreign lawyers in England & Wales.
