Junior Lawyers Division extends membership to include solicitor apprentices

From 1 September 2019, the membership of the Junior Lawyers Division of the Law Society of England and Wales (JLD) will be extended to include solicitor apprentices.

From that date, the JLD membership (which is free and automatic) will consist of:

  • solicitor apprentices
  • Legal Practice Course (LPC) students
  • LPC graduates (such as those working as paralegals)
  • trainee solicitors
  • solicitors with zero-to-five years' post-qualification experience

The JLD is about providing representation and support for those who are on the path to becoming a solicitor and those at the early stages of their career as a solicitor.

The JLD committee felt it was appropriate that solicitor apprentices should be recognised as junior lawyers in the context of the JLD, from the date they are enrolled as a solicitor apprentice (as is currently the case for LPC students).

It is believed that there is currently in the region of 150 solicitor apprentices and the JLD looks forward to welcoming them to future JLD events and more active engagement.

The JLD will also be looking to develop, over time, web content and resources for solicitor apprentices.

If you have any queries, either about the solicitor apprenticeship route to qualification or membership of the Junior Lawyers Division, email juniorlawyers@lawsociety.org.uk .

To celebrate the addition of solicitor apprentices to the JLD, we invited a current solicitor apprentice, Sahana Grimaldi of Womble Bond Dickinson, to give us an insight into the life of the JLD’s latest members.

Are you a solicitor apprentice?

If you’re a solicitor apprentice, we’d like to welcome you to the Junior Lawyers Division. There is no registration or enrolment process as membership is free and automatic.

We encourage you to keep up to date on JLD news, events and other issues affecting junior lawyers by subscribing to the JLD newsletter, following us on social media, and thinking about ways you can get involved.
