Join our diversity and inclusion committees

We’re looking to recruit new members for the steering committees of our four diversity and inclusion divisions: Women Lawyers, LGBT+ Lawyers, Lawyers with Disabilities and Ethnic Minority Lawyers.

The divisions help us to improve our outreach, and provide networking and support for women and marginalised groups in the profession. They also contribute to our wider diversity and inclusion strategy and activities.

The appointments for the steering committees are open to solicitors and non-solicitors who add value to the committees’ work and identify with the relevant protected characteristic for a division.

It’s our aim to make sure that within each committee we’re also representing a diverse range of perspectives and personal experience, career stages and the kinds of organisations members work in.

We particularly welcome candidates to each committee that help us ensure we are representing the diversity within that division. We want to ensure that each committee is inclusive and addressing the needs of those affected by intersectional discrimination or disadvantage.

About us

The Law Society is the voice of solicitors. We seek to drive excellence in the profession and to safeguard the rule of law. Diversity and inclusion are integral to these objectives.

We need to be representative and to ensure the profession is recruiting and retaining a diverse pool and acting inclusively. In doing so, it will be better able to uphold equal rights and provide high-quality legal services.

What we do

The steering committees for the division provide members with opportunities to:

  • discuss issues concerning the profession
  • ensure insights from, and the range of experiences of, division members are reflected and responded to
  • contribute to member content, networking events and communications
  • contribute to the overall diversity and inclusion member strategy, campaigns and activities

Selection criteria

You must:

  • have a clean record/regulatory history with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)
  • be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the issues facing solicitors in the division that you are applying to
  • be willing to contribute to the development and delivery of member outreach, networking, content and support for the division
  • be willing to contribute to the wider diversity and inclusion activities of the Law Society and collaborate across the divisions
  • have a track record of working to progress diversity and inclusion as either an employee or as a volunteer

You will be expected to attend between four and five committee meetings a year. These will mainly be held virtually, with a maximum of two face-to-face meetings (although virtual options will still be available). Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.

Appointments will be based on merit, following an open and clear selection process.
