Department of Transport consultation on proposals for new cycling offences - Law Society response
The Law Society has responded to a Department of Transport consultation on proposed new offences of causing death or injury by dangerous or careless cycling.
The proposed offences are based on similar offences that currently exist in relation to dangerous and careless driving offences.
The Law Society does not agree the proposed offences are necessary because existing offences, including furious and wanton riding, already apply to dangerous cycling that causes injury.
It points out that there are many factors that distinguish riding a bicycle from driving a car, which makes the proposed offences inappropriate.
