Attempted killing of human rights defender in Colombia

Who we wrote to

Mr Juan Manuel Santos, president of the Republic of Colombia.

What’s the issue

On 17 November 2016, an assassination attempt against community leader Mr Argemiro Lara took place in the town of Sincelejo after Mr Lara left a meeting in the town.

The perpetrator of the attack was shot by Mr Lara’s bodyguard.

Mr Lara is a well-known community leader in Sucre. He’s the president of the Association of Farmers of Finca La Europa who are working towards the restitution of this land, which is currently under dispute.

We’re aware that Mr Lara represents the local community on cases related to the restitution of land.

He’s also a member of Permanent Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, and the Movement of Victims of State Crimes in Colombia.

What we asked for

We urged the president to:

  • conduct an independent and thorough investigation into the assassination attempt of Mr Argemiro Lara, identifying those responsible and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
  • ensure the safety and welfare of all human rights defenders in Colombia, including developing effective protection strategies in collaboration with them
