Disappearance of human rights defender in Pakistan

Who we wrote to

The president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain.

What’s the issue

We’re deeply concerned about the disappearance of Samar Abbas, president of the Civil Progressive Alliance Pakistan (CPAP).

We understand that Mr Abbas went missing between 4 and 7 January 2017 and that he had previously been active on social media on matters relating to ethnic minority rights in Pakistan.

We’re aware that his family filed a petition on 11 February 2017 with the Islamabad High Court to ask for his release.

We have no further information on whether Mr Abbas is currently being held in detention.

We’re concerned that his disappearance may be connected to his human rights activism.

Mr Abbas’ disappearance is the fifth disappearance of a human rights defender between 4 and 7 January 2017.

What we asked for

We asked the relevant authorities to conduct an independent, expedient and thorough investigation into Mr Abbas’ disappearance and establish his whereabouts.
