Annual Sir Henry Brooke Awards 2019

We attended the 2019 Sir Henry Brooke Awards to celebrate the work of lawyers upholding the rule of law around the world.

The Law Society at the Annual Sir Henry Brooke Awards 2019

Our international programmes manager,  Lizzette Robleto de Howarth, and international human rights adviser, Marina Brilman, represented the Law Society at the second annual Sir Henry Brooke Awards.

The event was organised to celebrate and honour the courageous and indefatigable work of human rights lawyers globally in upholding the rule of law and protecting fundamental freedoms.

Organised by Peace Brigades International UK (PBI-UK) and generously hosted by Linklaters, the event took place in the presence of Sir Patrick Elias and Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers.

The pro bono work carried out by Simmons & Simmons to support PBI-UK’s business and human rights work highlighted the important contribution of UK lawyers to this agenda.

This year, the Sir Henry Brooke Awards went to:

  • Maricela Vázquez Sánchez and Carla Palacios from the Centro de Derechos Humanos Paso del Norte, Ciudad Juárez, Mexico
  • Donald Hernandez from CEHPRODEC, Honduras

Maricela, Carla and Donald’s stories were a humbling reminder of the role of lawyers and human rights defenders, who under extremely challenging circumstances risk their lives to safeguard the rights of their communities.

We were privileged to welcome Maricela and Donald thanks to PBI-UK.

In November 2019, we sent a letter on behalf of Maricela Vasquez highlighting her security situation.
