Joint statement on treatment of human rights defenders in Egypt

Attacks against lawyers and human rights defenders in Egypt have increased, with at least 20 arrests since we submitted a joint stakeholder report on Egypt in 2019 with the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy.

On 13 March, we delivered a joint oral statement before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva together with:

  • Lawyers for Lawyers
  • the International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute
  • the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy

The statement welcomes Egypt's acceptance of certain recommendations made during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process regarding human rights defenders.

We hope that these recommendations will be duly implemented by Egypt.
