Law Society joins calls for a UN Human Rights Council reporting mechanism on Egypt

We've joined with more than 100 leading human rights organizations from around the world to call for the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN HRC) to create a monitoring and reporting, mechanism on the ever-deteriorating human rights situation in Egypt.

The struggle for human rights in Egypt is at a critical juncture according to human rights groups, with the government invoking counterterrorism to justify these abuses and to criminalize freedom of association and expression.

Establishing a monitoring and reporting mechanism at the upcoming 46th regular session of the UN HRC, scheduled to begin on February 22, 2021, would serve as an important step in:

  • raising the profile of the violations and crimes committed
  • providing remedies for survivors and victims families
  • deterring further abuses
  • establishing pathways for accountability
