Community care – legal aid deserts

We should all get a say in how we are cared for. However, cared-for people fighting to stay in their own homes are denied support by a lack of community care legal aid services.

We analysed data from the Legal Aid Agency directory of providers (February 202) and the Office of National Statistics (2021) and found that in England and Wales:

  • 67% of the population, or over 40 million people, do not have access to a community care legal aid provider
  • only around 15% of the population have access to more than a single legal aid provider in their local authority area
