Trailblazing ex-president earns top legal reward

A lifetime achievement award has been handed to former Law Society of England and Wales president, Robert Bourns, at the British Legal Awards 2019.

Robert, who spent much of his career with TLT Solicitors where he is still a consultant, now chairs the Law Society’s board. He is an experienced advocate and employment lawyer.

As past secretary and president of Bristol Law Society and secretary of the Association of South Western Law Societies, he remains actively engaged in the debate around regulatory change in the legal profession.

Simon Davis, current president of the Law Society of England and Wales, said: “Robert’s award comes as recognition for his considerable contribution to the profession: as an experienced leader in his field, a champion of social mobility and access to justice, and as a distinguished former president of the Law Society.

“It is an award that truly is well earned - nobody deserves it more.”

Robert Bourns said: “This award came as a real surprise and an honour. Previous winners have included Dorothy Livingstone, Janet Lagrande and Philip Wood. To be considered alongside these greats is really humbling.

“I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had positions of responsibility within my own firm and the profession. It is a truly great, dynamic and principled profession. The work we do for clients is important.

“I am and have always been proud to be a part of it."

The City of London Law Society lifetime achievement award was given at an event hosted by Legal Week on the 21 November 2019 in Central London.
