Bicentenary highlights: celebrating 200 years of supporting solicitors

To mark 200 years of supporting solicitors, we travelled across England and Wales, meeting over 1,200 members at 46 events in 25 locations.

From roundtables and seminars to networking lunches, panel discussions, university talks and evening celebrations, these events gave you the space to lead discussion on the issues that matter most to your practice, build new connections and share insights that influence the future of the profession.

By meeting members where they work, we’ve learned more about what matters to you and how we can better support you as your professional body.

Your insights are shaping the next chapter of how we support the legal profession.

A strategy shaped by you

We launched our corporate strategy for 2025-28, shaped by the priorities and experiences you shared with us.

The strategy addresses the key challenges our members face and focuses on what matters most to your work, clients and the wider justice system.

It’s built around five missions, each with clear goals to strengthen the profession and deliver value to the public. These include:

  1. Technology – supporting adoption, security, and ethical use of AI
  2. Conditions for growth – driving growth through better regulation and skills
  3. Justice and the rule of law – protecting rights and improving access to justice
  4. Responsible business – promoting wellbeing, inclusion, and sustainability
  5. Member experience and value – enhancing benefits and championing the profession

Your voices will continue to shape what we do over the next three years.

Responding to change in a rapidly changing world

During 2025, you relied on us for practical guidance.

From conversations about the pressures facing high street practices to reflections on major developments in courts, regulation and legal aid, our aim was to make sure members stayed informed and supported so you could make confident decisions and provide the best possible service to your clients.

Our guidance and resources delivered online, in person and on demand helped keep you up to date with legal, regulatory and commercial developments, and ensure best practice This included updating and refining our in-house ethics framework, with new guidance on whistleblowing, introduced in response to member feedback.

We also published our 21st Century Justice report, which outlines practical reforms to level the playing field for those seeking justice and enable more people to access legal advice.

Our people make a difference

Guided by our values – clarity, excellence, respect and trust -we work with our members to deliver what matters most.

Together, we advanced equality, diversity and inclusion with the launch of our new EDI strategy, designed to strengthen leadership diversity, support disabled solicitors and build a more inclusive culture within the legal profession.

We welcomed 10 interns through our 10,000 Black Interns programme and awarding 15 scholarships to aspiring solicitors via our Diversity Access Scheme programme.

Our shared commitment earned the Investors in People gold Award, recognising the difference we make together and speaking to our supportive and inclusive workplace.

Looking to the future

As our bicentenary celebrations end, our priority remains clear: we are the voice for solicitors, driving excellence and shaping the profession’s future.

Our new Get Involved volunteering programme gives solicitors flexible ways to share their experience and influence the issues that matter most. It makes sure that solicitors from all walks of life can help shape decisions that affect their day-to-day practice and strengthen our collective voice when influencing the government on key reforms.

Through working groups, surveys and other opportunities, we’re harnessing the insights and diversity of our profession to drive meaningful change and put the power in solicitors’ hands.

Recalling our history and looking towards the future

We have been excitedly preparing for our 200-year anniversary. There will be lots of opportunities to be involved in our year-long celebration.

Looking to the future, our 21st Century Justice project aims to develop solutions to some of the problems facing civil justice in England and Wales.

We published an interim report outlining feedback we’ve received alongside further research.

The Reimagining Justice in Wales 2030 report detailed the unique challenges facing the legal sector in Wales over the next decade and outlines opportunities for growth amidst the wider political context.

Our people make a difference

Our dedicated staff work hard to make sure everything we do addresses the issues that solicitors have told us matter most.

We’re pushing for change and progress because we believe that a diverse and inclusive profession is a resilient one. We aim to lead by example for the profession by prioritising an inclusive work culture.

Our reverse mentoring pilot supported our senior leaders to understand the lived experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues.

Our third year of the 10,000 Black Interns programme saw us welcome 11 young people to the Law Society. These interns made a positive contribution, and brought fresh perspectives to our organisation.
