Welsh language SQE

Universities in Wales are required to comply with the Welsh language standards imposed by the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011.

It's currently possible for a person to qualify as a solicitor having taken all their required assessments in the Welsh language and completed their period of recognised training in Welsh.

The SRA has adopted a phased approach to achieving full parity of approach between English and Welsh on the SQE over four years.

We are now in phase two, with candidates able to provide their responses to the SQE2 oral and written skills assessments in Welsh, although the questions will be in English.

From 1 September 2023/24, there will be complete parity for SQE2, the questions for oral and written skills assessments will be translated into Welsh, and candidates can respond in Welsh.

From 1 September 2024 there will be full parity for all SQE assessments.
