Welcome to the Law Society’s new offer, developed to support individuals seeking to return to or progress in their careers in law.
It replaces what was known as the ‘Returner Course’ and aims to offer a much more comprehensive set of tools to better support not only those who are seeking to return to the profession but also those whose skills might need updating to further develop their careers.
What does the offer include?
- Law Returners initiative in Leeds and Manchester
We have partnered with Women Returners to offer up to 40 six-months paid placements to legal professionals who have had an extended career break of at least 18 months, and who are looking to return to work in private practice and in-house legal departments in Leeds and Manchester. The programme is open to both women and men.
The application process of this programme is now closed. Please bear with us while we finalise the next stage. Visit our partner’s website.
- Career options event
This free event on Wednesday 22 May for those wishing to return to or change their career in the legal profession will help you explore your career options and the support available. The event will feature a panel of speakers showcasing different examples of the careers options available to you.
Delegates will also have the opportunity to visit an exhibition space where they can find out more about the support offered by LawCare, Women Returners Network, Practice Advice Service, Solicitors' Benevolent Association, Solicitors Assistance Scheme, Solicitors Regulation Authority, and Energise Legal.

We are currently working with alumni of our previous Returner Courses to set up a Back to Law Ambassadors programme, offering role modelling and informal mentoring opportunities for returnees.
We are also working with members across England and Wales to develop a regional engagement programme to ensure we reach as many people as possible. We continue to liaise with members to secure better placement opportunities for returnees.
The offer is being delivered with the support of the Women Lawyers Division, in partnership with the Career Progression team.
