How your practising certificate fee is spent: our budget for 2021/22

Last year, we recognised the challenges faced by our members as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic by reducing the amount we received from you through the practising certificate (PC) fee, by a total of £3 million.

Given the ongoing uncertainty, we propose to maintain our proportion of the PC fee at the same level for the year ahead.

What is the PC fee?

All solicitors practising in England and Wales must hold a practising certificate, the rate for which has been maintained at £278 since the 2017/18 fee year.

How is your PC fee usually allocated?

How will this change next year?

For the 2021/22 year, we're proposing to maintain our share of the overall PC fee collection at £28.5m, once again providing members with protection from inflation so far as our proportion of the fee is concerned.

In 2020/21, we recognised the challenges faced by the profession as a result of the pandemic and elected to reduce our overall collection from the PC fee by 10%. This meant our proportion of the total fee fell to 28% of the total collection.

During the same year, there were increases in other components of the fee attributable to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), Legal Ombudsman and other levies.

The decision to reduce the amount we collected meant fee levels for individual members could be maintained at a time when the profession faced a great deal of trading uncertainty.

We also gave significant discounts against our accreditation schemes during the pandemic and provided free access to key training for members.

What does your fee fund through the Law Society?

In 2021/22, the £76.40 you contribute to our work through your PC fee will be allocated in the following ways:

Your opinion matters to us

We are working hard to be a modern, professional membership organisation, and recognise there is much more for us to do.

In May/June we ran a consultation with members, asking for your views on how we propose to use the funds we receive from your PC fee next year. We also asked whether you feel the benefits and services we provide represent value for money.

A summary of the consultation findings will be shared on this page at a later date.
