HMCTS announces court reform extension

7 March 2019

HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has announced a one-year extension of its court reform programme.

The extension takes into account our concerns about the risk that the fast pace of this ambitious reform programme would not allow sufficient time for proper testing, evaluation, and evidence that technology works.

The extra time will allow HMCTS more time to develop some of the shared systems that sit behind their next set of online services, and to accommodate changes to the crime programme.

HMCTS is now anticipating a finish date for the programme in 2023, subject to cross-government approvals.

We have been advised that the extension will not affect existing services that have shown success - in divorce, probate, civil money claims and the social security and child support appeals.

We will continue to engage with HMCTS to ensure our views and the views of our members, and the needs of clients, are fully considered in the development of proposals and design of reformed services.
