Volunteers wanted for local media panels

20 September 2018

The Law Society is trialling a new initiative in some of our regions, and we’d like our members to get involved.

We’re working with local media to help raise the profile of the important work solicitors do to assist people in their everyday lives and to help consumers understand their day-to-day legal needs. Local media panels will be set up in three areas of England and Wales.

The three pilot areas are:

  • South Wales
  • Bradford
  • Tees Valley and County Durham

To be on one of our local media panels you need to have:

  • a minimum of four years’ post-qualification experience
  • a specialism in a relevant area of law (i.e. one of family, conveyancing, business, wills and probate, personal injury or criminal law).

What will I have to do?

The plan is to roll out a series of monthly columns in local and regional newspapers looking at the legal do’s and don’ts that affect ordinary people. Topics will include making a will, buying a house, getting a divorce or setting up a new business.

We will be asking you to:

  • be prepared to write short, plain English summaries of legal issues in order to meet media deadlines
  • share the spotlight with other solicitors in your area – the idea is that different people get a chance to contribute on an ongoing basis.

This is a new initiative that we’re trialling so some of the details might change.

The Law Society team will help set this up and support it, but ultimately we would like to hand this over to local solicitors / Law Societies for them to manage directly.

How can I get involved?

If you’re a practising solicitor in one of our selected areas and would like to get involved, please email lawsociety@dtw.co.uk

Please provide brief details of your level of experience, your specialism, where you work, and we’ll be in touch soon.

This is a trial at this stage, which is why we are only looking for members from selected areas. If it works well, we’ll be looking to extend it to other parts of the country.
