Graham Turnbull essay competition and lecture

18 October 2019

The Graham Turnbull essay competition 2019 is now open for a chance to win a £500 cash prize.

The competition is named after English solicitor Graham Turnbull, who was tragically killed in 1997, aged 37, while working as a human rights monitor on the United Nations Human Rights Mission in Rwanda.

Essay competition

Each year, law students, trainee solicitors, pupil barristers and junior lawyers (current, prospective or in between stages) are invited to enter our annual Graham Turnbull essay competition.

The title of the 2019 essay is: "Has the rule of law been replaced by the rule of politics?"

The winner of the competition will be announced at the annual Graham Turnbull lecture, where they will be presented with a £500 cash prize from the Graham Turnbull Memorial Fund.

The maximum word count for the essay is 2,000 words.

Essays must be submitted by 5pm on Monday 25 November to Sarah Richardson.

For more information and to see the eligibility criteria, download the Graham Turnbull essay competition guidelines (PDF 103 KB).

Graham Turnbull lecture 2019

The Graham Turnbull lecture will be held on 10 December at the Law Society.

This annual event, held on international Human Rights Day, raises awareness of human rights issues, alongside announcing and celebrating the winner of the Graham Turnbull essay competition.

We will be joined by keynote speaker Tom Hickman QC, a leading barrister with Blackstone Chambers. Tom was recently part of the team representing Gina Miller in both of her legal challenges against Government. He will be sharing his thoughts on this year’s essay question and announcing the competition winner.
