How long can I retain a private client file for?

I work as practice manager at a firm that deals predominantly with private client work. We are reviewing our file retention policy. Is there any information on retaining client files and papers?

Yes. You may wish to refer to our practice notes on file retention: wills and probate and file retention: trusts.

The Law Society’s Wills and Equity Committee has set out information to help practitioners identify issues that should be considered before relevant files are ‘weeded’ or ‘destroyed’.

For more information, see our practice notes on file retention and file closure management or contact the Practice Advice Service.
