Government response to Lammy review met with disappointment

21 December 2017

Read his review on the government's website.

One of the recommendations in the report was to set targets for more diverse judges

Responding to this the Government indicated they would not set judiciary targets for underrepresented groups (and in particular BAME lawyers) which has been met with concern and disappointment from many commentators. Currently BAME lawyers make up 5% of judges and there are only three High court judges

Umar Kankiya, solicitor at Sternberg Reed and member of the Ethnic Minority Lawyers Division expressed his frustration and disappointment on an interview with BBC newsbeat. Read Umar's article.
